John Edwards is everywhere in LA this weekend. Today, at the Presidential Forum on Global Warming and yesterday, images are pouring in all over these internets of Edwards in Burbank at the WGA Strikes.

Edwards won’t walk the line today

Filed under: 2008 Primary, Labor, Photo Ops — none @ 4:42 pm

Presidential campaigns try to capitalize on the news. But sometimes the news just won’t cooperate.

Just ask John Edwards. He planned to march the picket line with striking United Auto Workers members in Buffalo, on the way to the Democratic debate at Dartmouth College tonight.

The appearance with Local 774 outside the General Motors powertrain plant would have been a sure-fire photo opportunity and TV moment (and maybe footage for a campaign ad) for someone who has been fighting for unions for years and who is counting on labor support to boost his candidacy. The strike would have been a perfect talking point during the debate, especially to press his case that the Clinton administration — including frontrunner Hillary Clinton — hurt workers with free trade agreements.

But then GM and the UAW announced they had reached a tentative settlement covering 73,000 workers.

After cancelling the picket-line appearance, Edwards tried to make the best of the situation.

“I honor the strength and solidarity shown by 73,000 UAW members who walked the line to get a deal that protects their jobs and honors the standards they have created over decades,” he said in a statement issued by his campaign. “This process illustrates that collective bargaining works, and I am happy that both sides are satisfied with today’s outcome.

John Edwards’ Katrina contest

Filed under: 2008 Primary, Fundraising, Katrina, Photo Ops — is @ 5:32 pm
In a fundraising e-mail to supporters, Judith Giuliani says that anyone who makes a contribution to Rudy Giuliani’s presidential campaign this week will be entered in a contest to win a trip to New York to spend some time with him at ground zero.

Offensive? Outrageous?

It would be if it actually happened.

But in a fundraising e-mail to supporters, Elizabeth Edwards says that anyone who makes a contribution to John Edwards’ presidential campaign this week will be entered in a contest to win a trip to New Orleans to work with him in an area hit by Hurricane Katrina.

Fair comparison? And if not, why not?

Edwards buys TV time to rebut Bush

Filed under: 2008 Primary, Fundraising, Image, Iraq War Funding, Photo Ops — none @ 11:19 pm

Instead of waiting for an invitation, former Sen. John Edwards (D-N.C.) purchased two minutes of airtime on MSNBC Thursday night to rebut President Bush’s nationally televised address to the nation to discuss the war in Iraq.

The Edwards campaign declined to disclose the cost of the buy, but it said that Edwards would “remind the American people that Congress can — and must — force an immediate withdrawal from Iraq.”

The taped ad will feature Edwards speaking to the camera, and his campaign says it is the first time a Democratic presidential candidate has taken to the airwaves to challenge Bush on the war. Sen. Jack Reed (R.I.) is scheduled to give the formal Democratic response.

The ad follows reams of press releases Edwards has inundated the media with in recent days, weeks and months as he seeks to distinguish his voice on Iraq from that of his Democratic presidential rivals, Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton (N.Y.) and Barack Obama (Ill.).

Edwards walks picket line in Chicago

Filed under: 2008 Primary, Photo Ops, Transparency — none @ 1:29 am

Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards killed two birds with one stone Saturday, briefly walking the picket line with striking Congress Hotel workers while simultaneously shooting footage for potential campaign promotions

snip: “I was proud to be with you years ago, I’m proud to be back with you now,” Edwards said to cheers. “Your cause is my cause.”

In addition to reaffirming the blue collar thrust of his campaign, Edwards’ tour on the picket line was fodder for future campaign commercials and online spots.

As is common in current political campaigns, an Edwards-affiliated videographer was shadowing his candidate’s every move.

After walking the line, Edwards stepped in front of his videographer and, with the striking workers in the background, declared, “I’m John Edwards and I approved this message.” Then he hopped into a maroon minivan–one car only, no motorcade– and zipped down to McCormick Place to face the liberal bloggers at the YearlyKos convention.

Edwards is Esquire’s latest cover boy

He didn’t drape himself in a silk sheet like Angelina Jolie, but Tar Heel presidential hopeful John Edwards is the next cover celebrity for Esquire magazine.

Edwards stands on the August cover, looking up beside a provocative headline: “Can a white man still be elected president? If so, John Edwards will have to battle image, cancer & the forces of history.”

Louisiana gets look at candidates; Edwards blasts hurricane response

Filed under: 2008 Primary, Photo Ops — none @ 6:31 pm

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Presidential contender John Edwards lambasted the Bush administration Friday for reportedly “squandering” millions of dollars in aid offered by allies after Hurricane Katrina slammed into the Gulf Coast.

Edwards made his comments after a brief appearance in jeans and work boots at a site where Habitat for Humanity is building a house in the hard-hit 9th Ward. The former senator and Democratic contender was to speak Friday afternoon at the National Conference of Black Mayors’ annual convention.
